2830n supports Infinity 2? was created by strouds
Hi,

I have been using a 2830n with the original type of BT Openreach Infinity VDSL modem for a while now - working great! I removed the "Infinity Home Hub" as soon as the engineer's back was turned.

BT have just advised that an upgrade to Infinity 2 (up to 76Mb/s) is now available, but I'm unsure what new hardware they supply and whether my trusty 2830n will work as a replacement for the new HH3. I've also heard nothing about the threatened "modem replacement" for all the modems that were overheating. Mine is the original type I think.

So, for Infinity 2, do they replace the modem, or does the existing one just work?

Can my 2830n replace the Home Hub 3 that will presumably turn up in the post if I choose to upgrade?

Do I need to reconnect my original Infinity Hub temporarily so that they can do whatever is needed for the upgrade? The website suggests that everything is done at BT's end within 3 days, with no mention of an engineer visit, but they do mention that I will be ordering a HH3 if I upgrade.

Thanks in anticipation.

Simon.

I can answer part of that: In general they do not replace the modem. The existing BT Openreach Infinity VDSL modem can handle the 'up to 76Mb' service they just remote re-config your circuit in the green box up the road to re-sync at the higher rate.

Don't know if they replace the router but there is no reason why your 2830n should not just carry on regardless. Whether you will get the full speed that the line is providing or whether the 2830n becomes a bottle neck at that speed remains to be seen.

BT HH is not nearly a specialised as BT would have you believe, well not in the way they tell you. It is downright unfriendly to everyone else's wifi, IMO.
