ok got the VPN working (with a lot of help) using the router to router method.

On the outstation I can map a drive using \\192.xxx.xxx.xxx\sage and \\192.xxx.xxx.xxx\userdata.

Open either directory and within 3 secs the folder list appears.

Use word or excel to open a document from the outstation and within 5 secs the document is open and ready to go.

open sage 50 2009 , make a cup of tea, add 15 sugars drink half of it and then the accounts list will appear ( around 3 minutes) double click one of the accounts and after a couple of minutes the user name and password screen appears. Insert that, wait another four minutes and sage finaly opens.

I suspect this isn't right? I've disabled the virus checker on the sage accdata but it has made no difference.

Would appreciate any help, hints or methods of painless suicide;-)

sorry, sage isn't designed to work over a wan or vpn. it's resource intensive.
use terminal services or rdp.

Agreed; Sage is not WAN friendly. It's not a client-server program, it accesses a file based database so too much traffic flows for remote access. Like Louis said, use TS/RDP etc.
