Smart VPN V5.0.0 was created by hornbyp
As noted here: https://forum.draytek.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=22582 ,

Smart VPN 5.0.0 is available for download from:
ftp://ftp.draytek.com/Utility/Smart%20VPN%20Client/v5.0.0/

However, when I try it, I get a subliminal flash of the GUI and a message written to the Application Event Log, saying "SmartVPNService is going to Stop"

Which operating system? Also if it's Windows 10, is that a microsoft account or a local/offline account?

This is available in the DrayTek UK downloads section: https://www.draytek.co.uk/support/downloads/software

If you're seeing issues with the new 5.0.0 SmartVPN client, or the previous 4.3.4 version, please report that to the support team for troubleshooting and so that these issues can be fixed.

The older version 4.3.3 should work if you find that the newest versions do not, because it doesn't have the user level operation mode.

Windows 10 Pro 64bit. Version 1803 (OS Build 17134.254). The account is an Active Directory Domain account. It turns out that this version of SmartVPN runs on one my laptops successfully - using the same account.

I found some odd 'debugging' messages, in Draytek_svc.log :-
Code:
[2018-09-07 00:34:30] ** >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> DrayTek Smart VPN Client >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> [2018-09-07 00:34:30] ** { WARNING } Microsoft Windows 8 Professional (Build 9200), 32-bit [2018-09-07 00:34:31] ** Status: No connection [2018-09-07 04:40:26] ** <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< DrayTek Smart VPN Client <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

(odd, because I've never used Windows 8!)

There is some more (equally unhelpful) stuff in ServiceLog.txt :-
Code:
[2018-09-11 13:42:54] ** >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Service Start>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> [2018-09-11 13:42:54] ** Service is Start Pending. [2018-09-11 13:42:54] ** Service is in initialization. [2018-09-11 13:42:54] ** Telling First 'SERVICE_START_PENDING.' [2018-09-11 13:42:54] ** Telling Second 'SERVICE_START_PENDING.' [2018-09-11 13:42:54] ** Telling Third 'SERVICE_START_PENDING.' [2018-09-11 13:42:54] ** Telling Fourth 'SERVICE_START_PENDING.' [2018-09-11 13:42:55] ** Service is Stop Pending. [2018-09-11 13:42:55] ** Service is Going Stop. [2018-09-11 13:42:55] ** Service is going to Stop in OnStop Session. [2018-09-11 13:42:55] ** Service is Stopping.

"Service is going to Stop in OnStop Session" .... indeed

That's useful to know, I expect the windows 8 reference might be a hard coded warning for Windows versions after a certain build number.

Could you contact the support team with those logs so that they can look into it and try to reproduce the issue?
