Vigor 2820: Failure to get SNMP working was created by screamingpict
Hi,

I have a simple problem;

For some reason I just cannot get SNMP working on my 2820.

I have enabled the SNMP agent and set the following settings;

Code:
Get Community public Set Community private Manager Host IP 192.168.1.101 Trap Community public Notification Host IP 192.168.1.101 Trap Timeout 10 seconds

For some reason an snmpwalk -c public 192.168.1.1 (from the machine on 192.168.1.101) always times out.

Anyone got any ideas? I am on firmware version 3.1.2 (haven't had time to upgrade to 3.1.3 but noone has been reporting SNMP issues with 3.1.2).

did you reboot the router after changing the settings?

I did.

However the problem has now gone away- the problem existed somewhere between the chair and the keyboard- i.e. user error. Sort of.

I was installing MRTG on my NSLU2 (great use for it! Now I have awesome monitoring of the 2820 running) and I assumed it was having an SNMP failure because I couldn't snmpwalk the OIDs on the 2820 from it.

However I later worked out that the MRTG config was slightly wrong and it all started working just fine.

Still can't figure out why an snmpwalk would fail when MRTG's SNMP stuff is working just fine tho. Ah well. I'm just happy I have MRTG working.

Thanks.

It only responds to queries from the IP in the Manager Host IP section...

I'd love to find a way to have multiple IP addresses defined...

/facepalm.

I guess I must have been trying the SNMPWalk from my Mac rather than directly from the NSLU2.

Since then I have moved MRTG over to my Mac Mini (the NSLU2 died in an embarassingly weird way- it would boot if I didn't connect the Ethernet connection, but as soon as I did it would start rebooting repeatedly). I just re-tested and was happily able to SNMPWALK the Vigor 2820 from the Mac Mini.

P.S. Would an SNMP forwarder allow you to have multiple addresses accessing the SNMP on your Draytek (i.e. proxying the second IP address through the first one)?
