I am migrating my ADSL MAX 8Mb/s service over to WBC Max 24Mb/s at the end of the month and was wondering if my existing router will work or will need to buy a new one ?

I know WBC Max 24Mb/s is Annex A but I am concerned about the performance of my router after reading peoples results with BeThere ADSL2+ and 2800's. (Annex M)

If the 2800 is compatible, will the processor cope better with Annex A than it did with Annex M ?

So how did it go with 21CN and the Draytek 2800?

I've only seen a few moves for 2800's but the results are consistently not good.

I've not changed any of the routers to use ADSL2+ (G.992.5) because Draytek and the ISP I use are aware that the 2800 firmware is not driving the ADSL chipset in the best way for connecting to the 21CN. There is a beta firmware which Draytek may make available at some point which should improve this.

Using G.DMT I've seen the line sync speed drop anything from 20% to 30%.

So thus far I wish I had not seen any migrations to 21CN.

well ive done exactly that...
BT 21cn ADSL2+ upgrade with a 2800 ive had running for 4 years with no problems... until 21CN!

And even after the 10 days training period, had many WAN drops, sometimes 10 drops in 15mins, sometimes wan stays connects for 10 hrs

Tried all sorts of fixes, havent tried the alternative firmware yet

BT say there lines fine,

tried new filters, test socket, switching the modulation, tried the beta 2.8.2.1 f/w

one thing is it always reconnects within about 20 seconds which is one small blessing

I guess maybe draytec are not too keen to fix this as its older hardware now?

Anyone else with 2800 BT 21CN experience?

After reading all the bad stories about peoples misfortunes using the 2800 series with other ISPs ADSL2+ offerings, I convinced myself to bite the bullet before my own upgrade to BTs 21CN ADSL2+ and bought a Vigor2820Vn. I partly justified this to myself by taking in to account the extra SIP/VoIP accounts which could be set up with the newer router (12 as opposed to 6 on the 2800VG). The 2800VG was then dispatched to family in Australia.

My new 2820Vn normally syncs in the 13Mbps plus range which allows me a BT IP Profile of 12000 Kbps.

However, I needed to disconnect the 2820Vn a few weeks ago to test a 2800V on my line before taking it round to a mates BT 21CN connection who was having some problems with his own router (or the connection).

I only left the 2800V connected to my line for about half an hour, but with no apparent problems during that time. What surprised me most of all was the fact that the 2800V synced at only around 0.5 Mbps less downstream rate than the 2820Vn was at the time (i.e. around 12.5 to 13.0 Mbps - I can't remember the exact figure now).

This was after updating the firmware to some other version than the version I had previously used for DSLmax (8128000 bps DS sync). I can't remember what version I updated to right now, but if anyone really wants to know I could fire it up and take a look.

So unless the 2820Vn manages particularly poor sync rates on ADSL2+ on my line, the 2800V in comparison didn't appear to be anywhere as near as bad as I'd been expecting.

My line stats on DSLmax (2800VG) used to be 27-28dB attenuation, SNR Margin 8-13dB (depending on time of day/year etc.)
On 21CN ADSL2+ (2820Vn) typical stats are 33dB attenuation, with SNR Margin 6-9dB.

[When the 2800V was plugged in on ADSL2+ I noticed the stats were slightly different to those given by the 2820Vn]

Having said the above, the only 2 routers I've tried on my ADSL2+ line are those mentioned, in other words I don't know if I could achieve higher speeds with a non-DrayTek ADSL2+ router.

for a 33db line (ADSL2+ calculates line attenuation differently, so it goes up compared to ADSL), those speeds are very normal, 13Mbps is pretty good in my opinion.
The reason you're seeing very comparable speeds with the 2800 is that BT don't use the same settings as O2/Be that limited the speeds to 7.5Mb max with ADSL2+, so you should see fairly normal speeds with the 2800 series, but if you have a read of the forum, there are mentions of PPP disconnection problems which are mostly fixed by using the 2.8.2.1 beta firmware.
