I'm sure that there's a solution for this, but I've scoured the forums and can't see that it's already been posted.

Situation is as follows:

our client has 2 ADSL lines into the building, one is ADSL2+ and is used primarily for internet access, sending emails etc. This is connected to a Draytek 2820 and works very well, with little or no dropouts.

The other line is used only for VOIP and is connected to a ZyXel P661 router and again, is very stable.

My client would like to be able to failover from the ADSL2+ (draytek) to the VOIP line (Zyxel) if the connection drops. I've cabled the ZyXel to the ethernet WAN port on the draytek, but the draytek doesn't pick anything up on that port and refuses to route any traffic through another router.

I've looked at adding a static route to the draytek with a high metric to route all traffic through the zyxel as well, but I can't see a way to add the metric in the static route section of the router.

Anyone have any ideas ?

what is the topology of the two services, Data and IPVoice? Eg does the client have two ethernet networks with separate cabling and switches for each, going to the separate routers?

That aside, in theory you might be able to do this by using the 2820 second IP range for voice clients and create a load balancing rule that routes that range to the VOIP wan link. Enable failover to other wan link. That assumes you can get the zyzel to work with the WAN 2 port on the 2820, which should be easy. Set the zyzel to be a dhcp server with one ip address in its pool, leave the 2820 wan2 settings as 'dchp client' and it should work. Check the 2820 status page to make sure its connected.

Final thought, in event of wan 1 failure, all traffic will use wan 2. Voice quality could be affected in this situation so warn the client.

thanks for your reply. Yes the 2 networks are seperate - the VOIP network is basically an alcatel box, the router and a few IP phones - the only link between the 2 networks is the CAT5 cable from the Draytek to the ZyXel. The client will NOT want to use the draytek as his primary VOIP router as he is very happy with the situation he has currently setup with the zyxel.

I've set the draytek WAN2 link to get an IP from the zyxel, but it never seems to obtain one (although I know that the zyxel DHCP is enabled and working, as devices on that network successfully obtain an IP).

The next available IP address in the scope IS 192.168.0.34, so that suggests that the Offer stage of negotiation is occuring, but the Draytek never actually accepts it.

The WAN2 status always stays red on the status page, and if I try and do a ping test from the router to ping the internal IP of the zyxel, it tells me that WAN2 is not online !!

There's got to be a way to do this...

Do both networks have the same IP range as that may cause some confusion?

It looks like the zyxel is 192.168.0.1 and is offering the draytek 192.168.0.34. What is the IP of the draytek?

After that - WAN2 obvioulsy has to be enabled and set to obtain IP automatically from:
WAN -> General Setup
WAN -> Internet Access

You dont need static routes or anything.

Load Balancing is then done from:
WAN -> Load Balancing Policy

the zyzel manual has 192.168.1.x as default ip so you are right there may be a conflict with the 2820 range. could be worth changing as a test. also try changing the wan 2 connection detection to ping from arp.
