Firmware update, modem code advice please was created by manney
Hi all,
CURRENT SYSTEM INFO
Model Name : Vigor2820 series
Firmware Version : 3.2.1
Build Date/Time : Jun 11 2008 14:51:09
ADSL Firmware Version :211801 _A Annex A
I wanted to update my firmware to the latest version so went to the download site and downloaded Vigor2820+V3.3.4+Annex+A+211801 .zip
as I presume the "modem code" is what appears in my current firmware details
But then noticed another file available on the download site for modem code 232201:
Vigor2820+V3.3.4+Annex+A+232201 .zip
which has next to the descriptionRECOMMENDED FOR THE UK
Do/can I run the 232201 firmware update as I am in the UK, if i seem to be an a different modem code
OR
can you only upgrade using the 211801
Anyone any advice re upgrades in general? Do i need to backup and then restore my configuration settings after the update?
Any advice greatly appreciated
TIA

you can upgrade using a different modem code. It's good practice to back-up your settings, but you don't need to if you flash with a .all file rather than .rst

Any advice on what the different modem codes represent? I've just moved my UK one to the US so I'll consider swapping firmware for a more suitable one if it's going to be worth it.

Is just what it says, different modem codes, i.e different software code in the bit of the firmware that controls the ADSL modem. Some to suit short lines, some to suit long, some to suit quirks of certain ADSL2+ implementations. Try them all, see what works best for you.
In the UK you want Annex A.
I'm using 3.3.4 232201_A

Don't forget to read the horror stories of 3.3.4 on here before deciding to upgrade to it.

I wasn't planning to go 3.3.4; I'd just look at the different modem codes for 3.3.3.
Is there anywhere that actually documents the differences between the modem codes?
I've established that 232201 is the recommended one for the UK, 211011 is the standard one, but there are also 211801, 243601, 243701, 244001, 2121501, 2211201 and 2431301 available.
