2820vn & Synology NAS --- cannot see the web mgmt console? was created by beardd
Hello everyone.
First post here for me, down to sheer frustration;-) I've used Draytek kit for many, many years & love it. It's normally reliable, bullet-proof + logical to configure. Until now. Perhaps the collected wisdom here can suggest some ideas.
I have recently replaced an old Draytek 2600v with a 2820vn, when I swapped DSL provisioning. I have also recently installed a Synology 207+ NAS on the internal LAN (lovely piece of kit, btw).
When I first setup the NAS, I connected directly from a PC to the NAS via it's web portal & configured, etc. --- no problems. Now, when I put the NAS and the PC on the LAN, I cannot locate the NAS. The NAS's web mgmt address is port-suffixed with :5000.
All the usual things are working -- the NAS gets an IP from the Draytek's DHCP, and can be seen to have got it in the Draytek console. There's nothing wonky in the firewall of the Draytek -- in fact, it's "straight from the box". It's almost as if there's a hidden set of management rules that are blocking :5000 access ?! And, btw, I have an old Netgear router which works perfectly when I plug that same PC and NAS into it --- both get IP addresses immediately, and the web mgmt portal is available. So that says to me it's not the NAS or my PC.
Have I missed something in the (arguably) more complex 2820vn setup?
Thanks, in advance
David

Hi,
As another Synology FanBoy (I have 5 of them ) I hope I can assist. They are great units and normally easy to setup.
First of all, what version of DSM are you running. If it's a 207+ the latest is 3.1-1636.
Second, did you configure it using The DSM assistant
http://ukdl.synology.com/download/ds/DSAssistant/DSAssistant_1920.zip
from scratch or was the Synology 2nd hand and already cconfigured.
If so you would have been able to configure basic the network settings. Did you give it a hostname and is so can you access it on hostname. you can try bothhttp://hostname and http://hostname:5000 if still no luck accessing it then try https://hostname:5001
The Synology really is very easy to configure and so is the DrayTek.
If after these steps you still cannot access the Synology when connected to the DrayTek I sugest reseting the Synology network settings (you wont lose data)
http://www.synology.com/support/tutorials_show.php?q_id=493&lang=enu
and then use DSM Assistant to determine the current IP.
When you do login to the Synology console Control Panel -> Network -> and ensure you have a Server Name in then click the Network Interface tab and check its set for DHCP (I use DHCP reservations on the DrayTek to ensure they get the same IP as I access them remotely). Once you have checked this then go into Control Panel -> Win/Mac/NFS -> and ensure Enable Windows File Service is selected then click on OK.
If your still having problems then let me know and I will try and post a full step by step walk through guide.
Good luck,
John

Morning John & thanks for taking the time to reply --- it's very much appreciated.
Answers to your questions as follows:
1. I downloaded the latest version of the DSM from their web site -- v4.1-2636. Your download suggestion has different (older) versions of the assistant & setup assistant. Although, given what I say in 2 & 3 below, I suspect that's not significant.
2. The unit was secondhand but I loaded the .PAT file again (DSM_DS211_2636), using the assistant (SynologyAssistantSetup-3.2-1920) with a PC<->Synology direct connection. Unit found, PAT loaded, able to then see the web mgmt portal, login, create volumes (etc.) --- all fine.
3. Because of 2., I could see & set the basic network settings. I didn't set a hostname (will try that) but, as I noted earlier, when I use the other (Netgear) router, I connect just fine using the IP address on port 5000. Plus I could do all the normal things you'd expect - tested the creation of FTP access, new users, etc.
4. No luck with the 5000 or 5001 ports when connected to the Draytek router. And, in the initial setup, the setup assistant couldn't see the Synology either.
I am not next to the unit right now but, with a weekend coming up, I will have more time
What ideas -= David

Hi David,
The reason I pointed you to that version of DSM was because you said in your original post that it was a "Synology 207+ NAS" which is a 2007 model. The latest version for that is 3.1-1636 as I mentioned
http://www.synology.com/support/download.php?lang=enu&b=2%20bays&m=DS207%2B
however your last post said you downloaded DSM_DS211 which is a 2011 model. I am confused :? what NAS you actually have.
Please can you recheck the exact model number and I will assist you the best way I can.
John.

John - hello again ....
Yes, it's a Synology 207+ NAS. So, perhaps I have downloaded the wrong file BUT it has setup OK. And I can see it through my other (Netgear) router.
