Vigor 2927 VPN setup query - Looks like this server end is just not working was created by Cliff in Auld Reekie
Hi folks,
I have a Vigor 2927 router on Virginmedia and have tried all flavours of VPN (that are possible) to facilitate access from a MacOS (Sequoia) client.
If I look at a Draytek setup guide such as: https://www.draytek.com/support/knowledge-base/5275 it starts with router(server) end setup - which makes perfect sense.
So, I follow it - easy peasy - to step 3 where it suggests that in VPN and Remote Access >> Connection Management I'd see some signs of life (Ready and waiting for connections if you like).
I have this scenario whichever type of VPN I try to setup.
If this setup guide is correct, it suggests that there is no point in looking at the client setup as it'd never have anything to connect to. Is this correct and, if so, should a router factory reset help perhaps?
I'd appreciate any thoughts - I have DrayTek Support on the case but we are not making any real progress.
Cheers, in anticipation - cos this is doing me head in!

Hi Cliff,
I can suggest the UK version of the guide:
https://www.draytek.co.uk/support/guides/kb-teleworker-xauth-macos
You will notice there is no step 3 for the router setup.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have followed it, or rather, an interpreted version of it - as the dialogs in MacOS Sequoia are not the same as in this guide and my Vigor 2927 on firmware 4.4.5.8 is ever so slightly different too.
I change my Mac to be tethered to my iPhone to test and I have always received the same "Server did not respond". Whether I try targeting the domain or VPN.domain (as in this guide), or WAN IP address from the 2927 Dashboard.
Ttrying the WAN IP address is to take DNS out of the equation but I'm not sure if I need a port number and I'm now looking into what that might be.
I'm at a complete loss with this.
Also, I see no messages in the Routers Syslog when set to type VPN, enabled; test; switch back to LAN; Refresh and Nothing! It's like my VPN requests never reach the Router's VPN server.

Is there some confusion arising from the "Step 3" in your first setup guide? Clearly, you won't see anything in there unless a client has actually connected, and it sounds as though you are not trying that - apologies if I'm wrong - because you're not going past "Step 3"? In other words, setup the Draytek VPN user as directed, then setup your Mac client and try to connect. I don't know why they put "Step 3" in that section, it seems a bit premature....

Cheers.
Certainly that's what I'd envisaged from the outset then I ran into these issues.
I have tried many flavours of VPN client: IPSec/XAuth, SSL, OpenVPN using the Mac Client (obv.), even DrayTek SmartVPN, etc and I have never received a response other than the Server did not respond.
I was hitting my domain name but am now trying the WAN IP address to take DNS out of the picture. Trying to go back to the bare bones.
I'm wondering if a Factory reset of the router might help so I'm preparing for that.
I have been able to pass VPN through the 2927 (with port redirection) to VPN-Server on Synology but I want the VPN on point of entry (The router).

Last edit: 17 Dec 2024 15:56 by Cliff in Auld Reekie. Reason: Needed to include the fact that I have also tried SmartVPN

Instead of blaming the router, I would rather check if other clients can or can't connect. Do you have a phone or a different computer, e.g. Linux or Windows?
If the above does not work, perhaps you can share a screenshot of your VPN profile (blur any public IP addresses etc.). Also, make sure that your VPN services are actually enabled on the router (and the router was rebooted).
[VPN and Remote Access] > [Remote Access Control]
