People,

Have just had the line upgraded to ADSL2 and am having problems. Line drops and very low down load speed (measured at 45Kbits) Firmware is 2.8.2. Line drops have made BT(?) set the max download speed to under 300KBits.

Funny things is my S/N is now 29, before the upgrade it was 14 at best.

Can anyone suggest what to look for or what config change I need to make?

Thanks,

Dave

Hello,

When you have or believe you have resolved the problem your going to have to ask BT to reset the line.

Change all microfilters.

Make sure your connected into the Master BT NTE5 box, initially disconnect all telephone extensions but also make sure that all extensions use only two wires connected to terminals 2 and 5, disconnect all others and especially terminal 3 (The Ring or Bell wire), you must do this on all extensions at both ends. Temporarily disconnect any other device connected to a telephone extension inc sky boxes, fax machines, ringers, flashers, caller identifiers etc etc.

Make sure ALL devices whatever they are have new good quality microfilters.

Your extensions, are they flat laid cables / wires or are they round.

Make sure all telephone wires / cables are CW1308 twisted pair (Internal) or CW1128 twisted pair (External).

An increased SNR is very odd and suggests that your lines adsl service is out of sync, this is something that only BT can resolve and it won't be easy getting BT to investigate the problem. The lower your download speed is the higher the SNR will be, this is normal. Frequent disconnections will automatically reduce your download speed and therefore increase your SNR value. Frequent disconnections are nearly always caused by a problem in your house and not necessarily on the extension your router is connected to. Your problem can be on some other extension even if theres nothing plugged into it.

If the OP's problem has not been resolved a rare wiring mistake that could cause such drasticly poor performance is double filtering the extension the router is on, the wrong way.

The wiring error is to fit a microfilter to the telephone extension where it conencts to the master/NTE5 and then put an additional microfilter on the modem end of the extension, end result is only a small amount of the ADSL signal makes it through to the modem because the first filter blocks it from getting to the extension socket.

On the basis that Dynamic line managment bumps the target noise margin up by +3dB per line flapping event, and a aline flapping event is determined automatically by the line losing SHOWTIME and resyncing to recover SHOWTIME 10 times or more in any given hour, and requires 10 days with no recorded flapping to step back down the target noise margin in -3dB increments per clear 10 day period. to get to your target noise margin by dynamic means either you are manually forcing reconects to try and get a better sync rate far too frequently and thus triggering a line flapping event or the line has a very large attenuation or some strong interferance source nearby like a microwave or a cell phone charger right next to the ADSL modems cable causing frequent error bursts causing frequent reconnects and triggering excessive flapping events.

you would need to post measured attenuation and your quoted line length from the exchange and tryremoving NTE5 consumer face plate and connecting a microfilter direct into the test socket with no phones conencted and see if that alters the achieved connection parameters at all, e.g. the attenuation etc. Also make sure Interleve data path encoding is enabled by your ISP/BT as excessive uncorrected errors will cause DSLAM's to force a resync even if the connection apears otherwise sound!

The 2800 is NOT compatible with ADSL2 / ADSL2+. I know the paint says it is, and it would have been, but ADSL2 wan't quite implimented by the providers the way that was anticipated when this now elderly unit was designed and manufactured. The regretable news, is that you need new kit.

Neal.
