Hi Guys,

I was about to buy a 3 Huawei Premium dongle (E367 - HSPA+) and wondered if, alternatively, the MiFi unit (E586 also HSPA+) could also be used as a dongle on the USB backup port of the 2820Vn router instead?

If so, I'd rather have the flexibility of the MiFi unit.

My concerns were that the MiFi was a standalone device and offered WiFi only. Could it act as a USB dongle that would be supported by the 2820Vn?

Regards

I'm fairly sure you can't use the Mifi like that with the router since it's a router on its own, the router is looking for a PPP interface where the Mifi is probably presenting ethernet over the USB interface, which the router won't know what to do with AFAICT, I did try the earlier Mifi (E5830) and had no success.
What I do these days since I'm using my iPhone's 'Personal Hotspot' feature and I have 'unlimited' 3G on that, I've got an access point set to Station Infrastructure mode that connects to the iphone's wireless network and converts that to ethernet that I can then plug into the 2820's WAN2 port :) Thankfully it's just a backup connection.

Rather convoluted but very handy and it's not like APs/routers that can do station infrastructure mode are expensive, I use a junky D-Link DIR615 flashed with DD-WRT for this and it works pretty well.

Yep - just tried my E586 and it just kept rebooting when the Draytek tried to connect. Feels not do-able. There is some sort of you tube video showing an iPhone plugged into the USB port but you need some iPhone utility "from Draytek site" - probably not the Draytek UK site!

Not sure if this is for real?
