Slow SSL VPN was created by bisonframes
I've finally taken the plunge and decided to try SSL VPN to give my users Remote Desktop access to a company server. Previously I had been forced to use an exposed port 3389 and firewall rules to limit external IP addresses.
I've followed instructions and installed an SSL certificate.

What has surprised me is how painfully slow it runs.

The remote desktop screen takes two seconds to draw the full screen, and any large area updates are similar. The cursor is black and malformed.
The Virtual Network takes over a minute to connect and then has no function - I cannot access network drives or machines.

If I connect using Windows 7 VPN there are no such problems. Drives and RDP are as if I'm sat on the local network.

I'm new to VPN. Have I missed something in the setup?

Edit: Sorry forgot to mention. It's a Vigor 2830n Single Band.

Use Ipsec VPN with those older models.
With ShrewSoft VPN client (or the paid TheGreenbow VPN client).
It's quite fast

SSL VPN is fast only one those 2960/3900 models

Hi fchef, Many thanks for your reply.

The Pptp VPN runs great with the inbuilt Windows 7 VPN connection, and I'll try IPsec now too.
I'd hoped to have more control over the user experience with the SSL VPN web interface, but I'll look at other options for that now.
