Help setting up DHCP was created by scotchess
Can anyone advise me what the best settings are on Draytek 2860 to allow router to handle DHCP from clients when there is a File Server on the network
e.g. Fileserver is 192.168.16.2 and Draytek is 192.168.16.1
Is it correct to setup on LAN >> General Setup / Enable Server / Start IP 192.168.16.50 / Gateway 192.168.16.1 and leave DNS entries blank?

Or should I enter 192.168.16.1 as the DNS Primary IP Address. Do I need to enter 192.168.16.2 as Secondary address so PCs can access the file server?

What about Fixed IP NIC settings for the server itself? Fixed IP of 192.168.16.2 and gateway 192.168.16.1 to be Draytek – seems okay.
And do I enter 192.168.16.1 DNS or leave blank?

Will that all work and allow clients to pick up DHCP addresses / browse internet and access fileserver?

I assume you when you say File Server you mean DNS server, say a Windows Server 2012 box with DNS enabled.

So for the LAN Ethernet DNS Server IP Address on the Draytek, you enter the IP addresses of your server(s). We have two DNS servers on 192.168.11.90 & 192.168.11.94, entered in this box. The Draytek is on 192.168.11.1.

So when the connected PC's get a DHCP address, the DNS entries are the two values above, and the PC's query them for DNS values.

Thanks Ian_M. Yes its a Windows Server 2016 box and it is running DNS (by default I think). So leaving the DNS entry blank on Draytek is wrong and I should enter the 192.168.16.2 address of the Windows Server 2016!
That now sounds logical for the clients needing DHCP but for the server itself which uses a fixed IP address of 192.168.16.2 and gateway 192.168.16.1 (the Draytek). What do I enter for it's DNS on the server network card? Do I enter the IP Address of itself 16.2 or the Draytek 16.1 or both..?

The server DNS IP address is itself either 192.168.16.2 (or 127.0.0.1, loopback address) .

Make sure the DNS service on the server is pointing to the Draytek 192.168.11.1 in our case, though could point directly to your ISP's DNS server of even a public DNS server.

If you have a secondary DNS server, as in our case then DNS IP entries are 192.168.11.94 & 127.0.0.1.
