Repurposing 2862 as Modem was created by alucidnation
Hi Guys,

Currently running a 2862 but have had the chance to pick up a Cisco RV260P for routing duties to go with my two WAP571 access points.

Being a relative newbie, could someone give me some pointers on how to set up the 2862 as a modem only?

I am a bit confused between PPPoE passthrough and Bridge Mode.

Thanks :)

The two types of bridging, PPPoE-Pass-through and Bridge mode, do operate slightly differently.

When PPPoE pass-through is activated, the router will relay PPPoE traffic from the client to the DSL interface / ISP, but only PPPoE packets.

When using Bridge mode, the router does operate more literally as a modem, it passes anything from the LAN through to the DSL WAN, which includes both PPPoE and anything outside of PPPoE traffic. Some ISPs use Multicast traffic for IPTV which goes outside of the PPPoE session, so I recommend to use Bridge mode normally to retain compatibility with that.
With ISPs that use static IPs or DHCP without encapsulating in PPPoE, it's necessary to use Bridge mode.

I think regular Bridge mode should be fine, it might be hard to access the 2862 if it's in full bridge mode.
