Could anyone tell me if its possible, and if so how, to block traffic to a particular host name.

I want to block all traffic from our internal lan to a dynamic DNS address, e.g block traffic from 1.1.1.x/24 to abc.dyndns.org

That would require the use of the DNS filter, see this guide which details how to set that up.
