L2TP over IPSEC VPN with Vigor 2820 was created by chrismanncalgavin
Hi,

I've recently installed a Vigor 2820 at our company and so far so good, although I am unable to get L2TP VPN function working at all!
PPTP works just fine, and IPSEC on its own works to create a tunnel (although DHCP and DNS don't work via IPSEC).

L2TP over IPSEC seems to connect find using the SmartVPN client on client machines, and can ping machines behind the firewall on the LAN, but is unable to browse to any shared folders.
There seem to be several people with this issue, and Draytek have yet to acknowledge it.

Does L2TP work for anybody?!
I assume I don't need to create and firewall rules or open ports/redirect, as other VPN methods such as PPTP work fine....

Cheers,
Chris

Can you access the shared folders using the format:
Code:
\\{Far PC IP}\sharename

2900Gi/v2.5.6; 2900/v2.5.6

No, I cannot browse shares this way on L2TP either with IP address or with name.

Works with IPSEC only.

Strange update to this...
Seems that some others have had similar behaviour.

When I open the remote web interface of the Vigor 2820 router in the browser of my VPN machine (connected with L2TP / IPSEC)
and go to the "Status" screen that automatically refreshes, this seems
to force the VPN connection to work.

It's almost as if it kicks it into action.
Have mentioned this to draytek but no response so far.
Don't want to have to keep the admin page open all the time to use the VPN!

Update!

This has been a long running issue with a ticket from Draytek.
Finally they have come to some sort of conclusion that there is an issue with the firmware related to L2TP over IPSEC VPN.
I use the current version 3.3.2.1

I'm suprised more people do not have this issue, although I have been told it is related to a combination of our ADSL configuration from ISP using the built in modem.
So I am waiting until the next official firmware release which I have been told should be by the end of October, and cure the L2TP VPN issue once and for all!
It should also include the feature I require of using a USB 56K analogue modem on the USB port (advertised feature on the box, but only currently in a testing phase!).

I have received numerous beta firmware updates in this long running case, but none have yet been totally stable. So I am awaiting an official version before I continue to use the Vigor 2820. For now I have reverted to using an old router in place.

Unfortunately this means using an IPSEC tunnel VPN for clients, which does away with DNS servers and means refering to every shared device by IP Address when connected by VPN out of the office...

Anyways.
Hope this helps someone else.
