Very, very slow LAN to LAN PPTP VPN was created by dbj
Hi,
I have a problem with a slow (and I mean incredibly slow) LAN to LAN PPTP VPN: The VPN setup is below, but a quick bit of information first:
One office in Newcastle upon Tyne, one in Geneva
8Mbps synchronous internet connection in Newcastle (not doing anything else - it's a new line)
10Mbps synchronous internet connection in Geneva (not doing anything else - it's a new line)
DrayTek 2920 at each end (both with firmware v3.3.6)
The VPN comes up OK, I can see devices in Newcastle from Geneva and vice versa, and pinging between the sites gives an OK result (about 30-40ms on average). However, the peak rate I can get for data transfer is about 35Kbps (yes, 35,000 Bps). I thought it could be processor speed on the Draytek, but the really odd thing is that if I make a VPN connection directly from a PC to either Draytek (obviously from an offsite network, a 20Mpbs cable connection) I can get it to transfer a file at about 6-7Mbps, which is about what I'd expect.
EDIT: Creating an IPSec VPN improved things, but ony to 150Kbps
Any help very gratefully received as this is due to go live fairly soon. Thanks
VPN setup:
NCL Out
Call direction: Out

I had a problem like this, when one of the sites was connected using a high speed wirelss connection. It even gets worse if you have a sattelite for your internet.
If your sites are distant, maybe the latency will also impact the speed even if traditional wires are used.
technical reason:
