they need to match EXACTLY (if actually required)
For example 60.172.32.179/29 is not the same as putting in 60.172.32.179 /255.255.255.248 the other end

Just a final update on this for anyone following.
We have eventually managed to get the VPN beween the Checkpoint and the Vigor to work in Main Mode. What the problem was that stopped Main Mode working on my test connection from the 2800 remains a mystery (although I have had a lot of notifications of maintenance on the EFM line recently so maybe it was something to do with that, although I can't think what it would be).
