Howdy Partners,

I've got a network littered with various Draytek Vigor models, the centre of which is a Vigor 2955 and I have LAN to LAN tunnels setup between sites using PPTP over series of high speed fibre based connections.

Could anyone please clarify some things for me:
  • which method of VPN tunnelling (PPTP, IPSec, etc) is going to offer me the fastest line-speed performance?

  • our PPTP tunnels don't seem to be able to achieve anything greater than 10Mbit/s, is this per tunnel or shared across all tunnels?

  • in theory, how many tunnels can these routers support before there is a performance impact?

  • are there any other VPN speed limitations we can expect with these Vigor devices?

If you are doing site to site then IPSEC L2L are the best VPNs to use. PPTP is normally user for remote dial-in and RAS
If the 2955 is quite old then the VPN through put is only about upto 25Mbs
If you want faster then you needs a better device
2860 = 50Mbs (VPN throughput) Max tunnels 32
2925 = 70mbs Max tunnels 50
2960 = 200mbs Max tunnels 100
3900 = 600mbs Max tunnels 500
