OK so given I have a choice, which is "better":
SSL, PP2P or L2TP?

PPTP is no longer secure - and shouldn't be used.
Re: SSL or L2TP/IPSEC - it's something I've researched before - with no definitive answer. There are plenty of reports that indicate that SSL might (potentially) be the lessor of the two, such as:

Having said that, the Draytek SSL client connects much faster and more reliably than the L2TP client built-in to my phone, so that's the one I tend to use most; for adhoc access, while out-and-about.
