802.11n, 2820Vn and Intel 5300 was created by vanaalten
Hi,

Just curious: did anyone here ever get a stable 802.11n connection between a Draytek 2820Vn and an Intel 5300 mini-PCI card?

For some reason, whether from Windows XP, Windows 7 or Ubuntu 10.10, the connection speed often drops from 300Mbps to less than 1Mbps, sometimes returning to acceptable speeds, sometimes staying down.

802.11g is never a problem - only 802.11n doesn't work reliable.

Yesterday I configured a Netgear WNDR3700 as w WLAN access point - and have a stable high-speed 802.11n connection, on 2.4 and 5GHZ. I just copied 17GB of data in roughly 40 minutes, something definitely not possible with the Draytek as access point.

So this proves that my 5300 card is functioning correctly - I just want to know if my 2820Vn is malfunctioning, or if every 2820Vn is simply incompatible.

So, therefore: does anyone have a stable 802.11n connection between a 2820Vn and an Intel 5300 min-PCI card?

Thanks,
Matthijs

I can confirm the same it would start off great 300 or 270 then it would slowly drop but more worrying it would sometimes stall and even the crash the router. Put it back to 802.11.g and its back to the stable fast wireless network I've always been used to. Its not just the Intel Card either i've got a iPhone 4 which showed the same symptoms.

2820Vn, 3.3.5 firmware, working great with an intel 5300 here on XP, full 802.11n transfer rates, doesn't drop.

Have you checked whether the speed is dropping when an 802.11G client joins the network maybe?

@pmouat: thanks for sharing your experience. Here it doesn't crash the router, but the wireless connection does stall completely.
To me your experience shows that it's not my router that's defective, but a design error. If I ever sell my 2820, I know that it is working as Draytek designed it, and not malfunctioning...

@Voodle: no, didn't check this. I've got at least three 802.11g devices in my house, all are 'always on', so it is very likely that they're active on the network.
Why - is there a known bug I missed?

Voodle curious where did you get the 3.3.5 firmware latest one listed on the website is 3.3.4.1. I'd be interested to see if it makes a difference. In my case I can confirm that no G devices were on when I was testing.
