2820n and Vigor AP-800 was created by stirton
Hi,

Ok, wasted over 15hrs on this so far and wondering if anyone has these two devices 'reliably' working. The AP-800 seems very flakey.

Situation:

2820n router has one PC and printer connected in a outlying part of a building. Anywhere on the ground floor, devices can wireless connect in the standard fashion with WPA2/AES.

However, on the upper floors, the signal is very weak. In comes the AP-800.
With it strategically placed, the AP-800 picks up approx 80% of the 2820n's signal and now on the upper floors, laptops are getting 4-5 (out of 5) bars .. which is how users tell if it's a good signal or not ;)

Setup:

2820n

192.168.1.1

SSID = 'office'
WPA2/AES = "testing123"
Mixed mode (b/g/n)
Channel 11 (no other wifi networks detected on this channel)
Tx Burst = off

Under WDS:
- Mode = Bridge
- Security = Pre-shared Key
- Pre-shared key = "backboneKEY"
- Bridge tick box enable and MAC address of AP-800 entered

Access Point function enabled.

Now under the AP-800

192.168.1.2

Operation mode - AP Bridge-WDS Mode
SSID = 'office2' (have tried the same SSID and thought there were conflicts but same problem with different SSID + easier to see which AP you're talking to for testing)
WPA2/AES = "testing123"

Enable 2 Subnet (Simulate 2 APs) = Enabled (nothing works if this is disabled??) Removed Draytek B SSID and left 2nd SSID box blank.

Channel also 11
Extension channel 7

Phy Mode: Tried all 3 settings (CCK, OFDM, HTMIX)
Peer MAC address and Subnet LAN-A Security set to AES with the key being "backboneKEY"

Tx Burst off

The problem is the stability, and there seems to be no rhyme nor reason as to when it works.

Switch on 2820n, then the AP-800 and connect to 2820n's wireless and try pinging 192.168.1.2. Several request timed out responses. Switched AP-800 off and back on, then a batch of responses around 1ms-5ms, then more time outs.

In essence, no other known interference on the channel (tried other channels with same issue), strong signal between 2820n and AP-800 (even moved to 5m apart to test but same story).

I know the firmware of the AP-800 is still in its infancy .. anyone else tried this setup with these two models and have it reliably staying up?

Thanks
Neil

I tried the same setup but with a AP700 and got similar results to you. The signal strengths between the AP700 and the 20820n looked to be good but in practice when under load wern't. I eventually bit the bullet and put in a cable between the two. All problems solved.
