Is a -10db drop usual? was created by allat39
Hi,

I think our 2850vn may be getting some Wifi interference. (2.4Ghz, Using Channel 1 and 5 together)

Using Inssider4 I can see I am getting best connection at -50 on Channel 1 - the same channel as our next door neighbour.
I tried Channel 6 and 11, and they are worse in terms of a dropping signal - i.e.. -60 and -70.

However, with even Channel 1 at times dropping -10db from -50 to -60 for a period of about 4 -8 seconds, I want to find out if that is a 'normally accepted' amount, and if I am being unneccessarily concerned.

Is not usual, if you was more far may cause disconnection
But that depence ... the 2850 or any other modem/router needs to be placed in an open area where objects will not block the wifi
Other electromagnetic waves can cause issue but is been reported by few it could be & the draytek or the settings
Example here for settings (but are few other around)

or driver issue?

PS
i also notice with drayteks lower channels are faster in fact channel 1 is best (out of the drop issue)

Thanks,

I also followed up your links and the biggest change was setting the bandwidth to 20. (Not the default of 20/40)
Set the router to only WPA2/psk only.
Although the speed setting changed to 144 and not 300, INSSIDER is showed a nice flat line for 15mins.
I think that's the good news I've been after.

Anyways probably will find out more tonight when all five in the family are home and online in some shape or form with their phones or laptops.

Question
Does this setting of 20 (which is now removing the drops) indicate anything to do with the character/source of the interference, and does it also take away some 2850Vn functionality (obviously excluding the max speed drop from 300 to 144) :-) ?
Do other house phones need ADSL filters if they are only being used as phones? i.e. is it only the router that needs one?

Additionally...

Started dialog re moving things around :-)
and changed the ADSL filter (just in case) ..... Small difference in our long ADSL line..
Mode State Up Speed Down Speed SNR Margin Loop Att.
G.DMT SHOWTIME 832000 4896000 6 50
sorry about the text formatting....

Well the speed rate is less ... example with 40 is up to 300 mbps ... with 20 is up to 144mbps
note that both never really reach actual speed
The 20 mhz is more stable frequency almost with most wifi's
You will only see difference if you are using the usb for streaming videos(from a hard drive) or watching online HD streaming movies but i think your bandwidth is not enough for HD anyway

well not always make difference but leave it few days on ... after 5 days give a reboot to the 2850 (this is my theory) if will help ... anyway is good to have one for backup

If there is in the main master socket with filter no
example
http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/products/9881-adsl-nation-xte-2005/

If there is the normal BT socket then yes at each phone socket that there is a phone
http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/635/~/why-do-i-need-adsl-filters-%28microfilters%29-and-where-do-they-go%3F

At each phone socket where a device plugs in:
Unplug the device from the socket
Plug a microfilter into the socket
Plug any telephone device you have just unplugged into the microfilter's phone socket, and plug any broadband equipment into the computer's socket

Note the modem does not need filter can be plug direct to the phone socket (unless in this socket you have phone)
