Draktek Vigor2850 holding back VDSL speed? was created by andrewholland73
Hi Everyone

I'm having speed issues with my VDSL service (with Plusnet). I am paying for the Unlimited Fibre Extra (up to 66Mbps) but am only able to get around 35Mbps down speed.

BT Openreach came out last week and tested the line from my socket and confirmed that the line can support 55Mbps and can see no reason why I am not able to get that speed myself so they essentially blame my router as the cause.

Can anyone offer me some advice or help here, is there any known issues with Drayteks of this vintage having speed issues or is there some configuration option I'm not aware of that might be affecting it? Or is there something else I should be looking at as a possible issue?

The stats page for the router currently shows:

VDSL Information (VDSL Firmware Version: 1414c3 )

Profile State UP Speed Down Speed SNR Upstream SNR Downstream
17a Showtime 14256 (Kbps) 36754 (Kbps) 79 (0.1dB) 58 (0.1dB)

Server Information (Broadcom v11.00.09)

If this is any help, and the router is running firmware version 3.6.8.6_232201

Advice please!

Your router should have no problem handling a VDSL connection. We would need to see a full set of connection stats to see what is going on.

Before you take any drastic action though I would have a talk to a senior tech at Plusnet and ask them to check exactly what they are providing you with, they are famous for selling 80/20 connections but capping at the lower profile (up to 35Mb) , in other words you don't get what you paid for.

Hi thanks for that

It was running higher than that for a while when I first upgraded to it but after a period where I saw frequent disconnections (about which I complained) it started to stablise at around 35Mbps. If they had capped it would that still result in BT's kit showing a higher figure here though and if so, how/why?

Also, how would I get a full set of connection stats to show you?

The Vigor 2850 router's DSL modem does predate some VDSL features like vectoring and G.INP, so I think it would be worth trying out a newer modem/routers to see if that improves the speed.

The SNR value is around 6db (58 = 5.8db) which is ideal for most DSL lines, so with the Vigor 2850's VDSL modem, it's going as fast as it can. Details like the line attenuation might give more insight into the line quality and expected speed. That information is under [VDSL] > [VDSL Status] on that model. (line attenuation is called electrical length in those stats)

Ok these are all the stats from the VDSL Status page. I note though that a few years ago I was once on a similar "max" VSDL package and was happily getting 60Mbps from this router in a different home, this makes me even more confused really...
