i emailed tech support about this last night, and this morning they have emailed me thru another firmware to try (v3.2.2.1).

i haven't installed it yet as i'm not sure how to do it (as i'm using a mac).
do i need to install some update tool or do i do it just from the admin page of the modem?

You can do it from the admin page, under System Maintenance and Firmware Upgrade, just point it to the file and click Upgrade, then wait :)

ok have updated to the 3.2.2.1 firmware that tech support gave me.
i'll see how it goes today.

it had already dropped connection about 3 times this morning on v3.2.2

and if anything this v3.2.2.1 is even worse at dropping connections than v.3.2.2.

does the vigor120 produce any log files that can be looked at ? i have a look in the admin sections but couldn't see anything.
