Could you try out this firmware on the router and see if it still won't connect with ADSL2+?

Unfortunatly It still fails to connect at adsl2+ and falls back to adsl2 :(

If its a BT 21CN connection I believe the MSAN only allows an ADSL2+ connection if would benefit for using the higher frequency bins, otherwise it wll fail the ADSL2+ sync and re-sync at ADSL2.

Maybe so, but then the netgear works at adsl2+ with significantly higher speeds.
