As I could find no information on the internet to confirm compatibillity between the EE HUAWEI E392 USB 4g dongle and Draytek 2830 / 2850, I've manged to get one from EE for £19.99 with first 30 days free.

So for anyone else looking to use the new 4GEE service from EE with a draytek 2830 / 2850, I can confirm that on both models, default USB settings work without issue with the EE HUAWEI E392 USB 4g dongle.

I get full download speeds (22Mbs), but upload speeds seem to be capped at around 5Mbs (on PC max upload up to 10-15Mbs) on both draytek models.
As with all 3G capable Draytek routers (2820 / 2830 / 2850) I have used, there always seems to be a speed trade off for both WAN and WLAN with an USB ppp connection configured.
As soon as the USB dongle inserted, a noticable drop in WLAN speeds ( drops by around 10% both up and down) and WAN download speeds (drops by around 5-8 %) can be observed. Thinking this could be possibly a power issue with the Draytek routers needing extra power to be able to drive the USB dongle, an upgraded switched psu (3A) did not make a difference, nor the use of a powered USB hub.
Maybe these traffic rate changes are the result of a multiple WAN setup and auto load balancing causing these speed drops.

That's quite useful to know so thanks for the write-up :) It's especially good to know that you can get that kind of throughput through the USB modem - I've always thought the router was capping speeds but it seems that would be a mix of my location and the wireless > 3G throughput drop you mentioned.

Hi thanks for reporting
About dropping speed about 10% try and disable QoS & DoS and see if will make any difference with the USB

repeated tests with QoS/DoS/Firewall all disabled or enabled show the same results; as soon as you configure WAN3 and insert the USB dongle, speeds drop both WAN and strangly WLAN.
Same issue is also seen on 2820.

Just curious ... can you turn the 2 left & right WiFi antennas (Keep the middle vertical) to about 45 degree(by the sides) and try speeds again? (to the WLAN lower speed problem)

Hi,

Could you please share the settings that worked for you. I have tried using a EE HUAWEI E392 USB 4g on my 2830 router and cannot get a connection.
I am using these details:
APN - everywhere
Username - eesecure
Password - secure

The dongle works fine on a Windows 7 machine.

From syslog it seems to connect, but I don't get an ip address see below:
