Upgrading from 2820 to 2860 - can I just backup & restore?

I've got the same issue with moving from a 2820N (firmware 3.3.7.8) to a 2860N (3.8.2.3).
booting the 2860N after restore makes it reboot as soon as the DSL synchs up. It just sits in this loop unless you unplug the adsl cable.

I don't suppose anyone found a solution?
