I haven't heard back from them yet, but they said that it is best to upgrade your modem firmware with the .rst file so that the machine is fully reset.

Any idea what the story is these days on restoring a config file backup onto newer firmware? Its a shame they cant make the config file "human readable" at least...

I am not sure myself, as usual I just don't have the time to experiment with these things.

As soon as I have a quiet hour, I may restore the new firmware .rst version and load up my old config.

I just figured that that would be the same as doing the .all firmware restore.

Doing a .rst and setting the router up manually is a pain - as we don't use radius and users will have to set up passwords again.....

i reflashed with latest firmware using the .rst file and reloaded settings.

Connected to a vpn and after several minutes - I got the disconnection again.

I am going to report this as a bug to Draytek (though that shouldnt stop anyone else doing the same if they want to, they sometimes give out a test firmware so more testers might be useful!)

i reported it as a bug also, I haven't heard anything back from them yet. I sent a link to the forums posts in it also.

I got a response, an apology and a workaround in <24 hours! :D
It does sound like maybe a previously listed firmware "fix" in 3.3.2+ has actually caused this to me (Fixed: VPN DPD disconnect from remote side.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Peer_Detection

Thank you for your email.
It's a known issue and we will try our best to resolve it soon.
For the moment, please run "ping -t" to one of remote vpn node so that there is continuous vpn traffic.
Thank you very much for your report and sorry for the inconvenience we may make.
