Thanks for the image. As you say too different as you do trunking via P1.

However, I seem to have solved my problem... I turned off all the Vlan settings, unclicking everything as I did. Rebooted and set it all up again, rebooted and hay presto I could ping between Lan1 and LAN3 and LAN2 and LAN3 but not between LAN1 & LAN2.

Really don't know what I did differently as it all looks the same to me... Just one of those things I guess.

Well, thought I had cracked it... But then I though why don't I trunk and tag.

So I did, I set up the trunking via P1 and have FOUR VLANS taged 10,20,30,40. for Lan's 1-4 respectively and I set up Lans 1-4 with the address range 192.168.1.x, 192.168.10.x, 192.168.30.x and 192.168.40.x.

I have two switches trunked between them and the switches are Smart switches.

Lan 1 is processing with access to printers
lan2 is typically wireless with access to printers
Lan 3 is for printers
Lan 4 is guest access only so no Lan interconnection, just internet

Everything seems to work, except everyy now and again Lan1 and Lan2 can't access lan3 for printing.

If I prod and poke, it seems to work for a while and then it goes back to sleep again.... Have I missed anything in the setting?

A little more digging and some more detail on this problem.

Firstly I noticed on syslog that an error is being reported saying

"[ARP][ARP address mismatch - Ethernet destination address doesn't match ARP target address]"

So I took a look in the ARP cache, it looks like:

Notice the bottom two entries. Neither of these printers are working! Both should be part of VLAN2 not LAN3 Both have static IP (as they're printers) The are assigned their IP just like the two entries above which have been assigned to Vlan2.

Can anyone shed light on why these two printers would be assigned to LAN3 but not Vlan2?

do they come back the saem when you clear the ARP cache?
Are they plugged into switches usein tagged VLANS or port bases using separate switches per vlan?

Haven't tried clearing the ARP cache, was sure what would happen to all the routing if I did that! Will it just rebuild the table?

It's all tagged Vlans with port 1 carrying all the traffic into the first switch the other ports on the 2850 are unused.

Yes the list will just rebuilt itself with the devices that are connected. It wont effect the routing.
