While I have had only a few issues wiht the actual ADSL service BT offer, their administration is diabolical.

I am going to cut a really really long story short here. I moved house a year ago. I have spent the last 12 months trying to get BT to close my old ADSL account. After 12months they cut me off.

Even the written apologies and £220 in refunds (so far) could not compensate me for the time I spent on the telephone speaking to the most incompetant people on the planet.

The number of telephone calls to BT in the last month of my service with them was over 50. They are so caught up in their own red tape it is amazing.

I would not recommend BT to anyone. No matter how reliable a service is you will one day have a problem. It could be technical or billing related. BT could not tip piss out of a wellington boot if the instructions were printed on the heel.

Do not give these morons your money.

Hi all,
Well I use Nildram - of course that means I had to give up my Cable phone & 'go back' to BT, however Telewest dosn't offer broadband in my area so I had no choice. Nildram 'negitiated' with BT to get the line enabled = everything went acording to plan (yes, even with BT incvolved !) and I've had zero problems (so far :) )

A workmate has Cable broadband (Blue Yonder I think) and says its the cheapest way to go (they 'bundled' Internet with his TV subscription - he got Broadband 'free' by signing up for some £30 quid a month "premium film & sports" package = don't know if it's still availabe but it's a very good deal if you want sports anyway).

I recommend you look at http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/ for feedback on all suppliers in your area before choosing. To be honest, I found them all about the same cost & based my decision on good reliability and decent support (one of the Nildram Senior Tech's actually respondes to posts in the 'adlsguide' forum - and they even announce engineering changes) - this isworth a lot more than any couple of quid a month price difference).Cheers, Steve

IMHO

We have been with BT at the office for about 18 months and luckily kept the ISDN as a backup (it has been used a lot :( ). Getting any support is hard work.
We have recently switched to PlusNet and I have used PlusNet at home for about 5 months. So far no real problems but support has been good when required. You also get a good sized web space, PHP and MySQL in the price.
Out of the two I would recommend PlusNet.

I have used Hiway (the original company name, now altohiway.com and altodigital.co.uk) who are excellent. Mainly business to business but also to private users. Excellent and quick support from true experts. Apart from during set-up, which was due to my ignorance, no problems at all. Slightly cheaper than the standard £29.99pm.
